In firefighting terminology, a “Charged Line” refers to a hose that is filled with water, pressurized and ready to use. Our artwork by the same name takes inspiration from this moment of dynamic energy whereby water is released quickly through a hose, bringing it to instant life. Like a series of crazy dancing figures, the artwork transforms the energy and animation of flowing water into that of light, illuminating a public walkway along the southern edge of the new fire hall that links the community to the new fire department and to a public park access beyond.

The work proposed for the newly imagined Fire Station #5 entitled: Charged Line combines historic and recognizable Calgary firefighting elements (recycled historic brass hose couplings from the Calgary Fire Departments stores) with contemporary technology (LED lighting) in a dynamic and animated series of forms that illuminate both physically and symbolically the distinct identity of the fire department and its ongoing connection to the community.

Jill Anholt, as one of three artists chosen from across Canada, was asked to interpret the word “go” for a temporary sculptural installation built on site and exhibited for three weeks in the Vancouver Public Library. The work created, while responding to the spiral shape of its site, exhibited a “go” that goes forever. Go-go evokes infinite possibilities by reflecting the viewer, passers-by and the light-filled atrium’s space; generating an interactive composition of multiple perspectives.

WaterMark illustrates the interplay of time and water with natural and manmade elements both found in, and inspired by, their local context. Integrated into a stone wall within a North Vancouver Public Park, the cast concrete, resin and stainless steel piece provides a water source for the park’s reflecting pools and streams. Water movement through the work is affected by both rainwater run-off and direct interaction with the piece by way of artist-designed sluice gate handles.

Urban Forest is an integrated art concept for a new public plaza in Vancouver that explores the layering of the site’s natural arboreal history with the later imposition of the City’s street system. A cantilevered seating element composed of multiple layers of laminated wood varieties floats above a grid of embedded LED lights. Underfoot, text elements poetically describe the qualities of the tree species that once grew on the site.

Four artworks installed in downtown Vancouver sidewalks poetically reveal the systems at work under the city’s surface. Composed of stainless steel and textured cast glass, the interconnected pieces exude intermittent steam collected from an underground heating system and light from the city’s street lighting grid. Integrated into the glass façade of a solar-powered educational facility designed by Busby Perkins and Will Architects (Centre for Interactive Research in Sustainability), a responsive tree image will increase the building’s energy efficiency while filling the atrium spaces with a shifting field of coloured light. The image is inscribed into a pixelated electrochromic interlayer in the glass, blooming and fading in response to sunlight levels.

In the outdoor plaza of a new residential development in the Fraser River delta, Sky River situates passersby within the space of a moving river. Visitors walk along a river bed layered with evolving sedimentary landforms, under an undulating stream of colour and light. Suspended dichroic glass elements reflect ripples of colour onto the ground, melding the experience of sky and river together.

Six stainless steel shafts rise dynamically out of the ground on a south facing grassy knoll, forming a public garden in Coal Harbour, Vancouver. The sculptures are inspired by the exploration devices used to search (unsuccessfully) for coal on the site in the mid-19th century. These glass and metal vessels act as periscopes and telescopes, allowing viewers to see an unexpected collage of reflected and actual views of the site’s past, present and future.
