An installation on Mill Street in Toronto punctuates a critical node joining the well-preserved, historic Distillery District to the south and the upcoming sustainable West Don Lands neighbourhood to the north. Pavement peels up from the sidewalk revealing an underside of textured metal and patches of glowing lights or growing matter. Exposing the systems of the site links its rich and complex history to the renewal of life and growth envisioned for the public realm of the future. The folded surface becomes a seating element where passersby might pause under the trees, surprised by the spread of life under the sidewalk.
