FALLING INTO FORMATION draws its inspiration from the tradition and history of the RCMP, speaking to the shared training all members experience at the Regina Depot at the beginning of their career wherein each new cadet undertakes an extensive 24 week training course as part of a 32 member troop to become an RCMP constable.
Thin stainless steel cables carry a crescendo of dichroic glass fins down towards the ground within the southeast stairwell of a new RCMP building. The dichroic glass fins are red in colour and transmit and reflect other colours beyond. They appear differently depending on viewer angle and ambient lighting conditions. The glass transforms in its spacing and orientation as it cascades downwards through the stairwell. From sparse to abundant, chaotic to ordered, the piece captures ideas of transformation and collectivity to create an ephemeral composition of light and colour.
