Southeast False Creek was once a centre of industry and material processing, recently transformed into a carefully designed, high-density residential neighbourhood. The title Refined speaks both to the industrial process of removing impurities to produce a pure, homogeneous substance, and to qualities of elegance, sophistication, and urbanity. The artwork draws directly from the forms and methods of salt purification once carried out in the building adjacent to the site, while reflecting on the broader transformation of the neighbourhood from industrial landscape to refined urban environment.
